PCDN Basketball in Belfast: A Peace Building Story

Global Peace Building Foundation’s Due Diligence Trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland
At the end of May 2013, Tom Etzel (President & Founder of GPBF) and other members of GPBF traveled to Belfast, Northern Ireland to see, first-hand, the building of peace through younger generations. PeacePlayers International (PPI), one of GPBF’s partners, is located in Belfast where the conflict between Catholics and Protestants is still prevalent and deeply-rooted. Tom said that the tension between both sides is still very apparent, but organizations such as PPI work hard to build peace and face to face experiences with youth.
Tom and his crew were able to witness PPI’s substantive peace building program that combines the fun game of basketball with an experiential peace education program called the Arbinger Institute curriculum. This curriculum helps players work through conflict and focuses on strategies for becoming better teammates and friends.  PPI-NI evaluates and measures the effectiveness of their programming through an independent organization.

Numbers and data aside, GPBF was also able to experience the true authenticity and value of peace building as they encountered face to face interactions with the children participants themselves. Tom and his group were able to get a true understanding of the “ripple effect” of peace building that they search for in partners. It was very clear that GPBF’s continued support, and support of all individuals involved, is what makes programs like PPI-NI possible and what gives them the ability to continue to bridge the divides in Belfast.

GPBF takes the time to thoroughly research potential partners, i.e. perform due diligence. The research is conducted primarily through interviews and observation of activities in the field.
