National Internet Governance Forum Cameroon

ImageThe first ever national Internet Governance Forum took place from the 27th to the 29th of August 2013. This unprecedented event brought together Hundreds of Internet brain children and leaders converged at the Yaounde Congress Hall for 3 days to deliberate on issues related to Internet Governance including and not limited to security, socio cultural and economic development and the role of the stakeholders involved.

The theme of the forum was ‘Internet as a vital tool for the socio-economic development’. The Internet wizards during the reflections tabled their internet crises, all facets that set the virtual network as a springboard for social development. The dupe and dishonest operations and transactions of arpanet business tycoons seem to be outlined factors slowing down the Surveillance system. Besides the high costs of the virtual internet service, frequent energy cuts and the regular band width issues, Internet Distribution Actors in Cameroon are making huge sums of money to the detriment of the ‘lamdar’ citizen. Condemning the frequent cuts of the lone Power supply company, the use of untrained teachers and the expensive nature of the virtual device as main factors to be addressed, Excel ASAMA (www.excelasama.wordpress.com) , the Hypernet next generation leader and CEO of Ivision International (www.ivission.net)  lauded the initiative saying “this marks the beginning of a new era in Cameroon where multi stakeholder and open standards of government is the model. In fact this bottom up collection and aggregation of intelligence for common good is known as practical democracy in action’.

Most of the key speakers drew the attention of the participants to consider cyber criminality and as the major threat to socio cultural and economic development in the coming decades:

Jean Jacques Massima, ITU regional representative for CEMAC and Madagasca

The representative of the Minister of Post and Telecommunications

The Director of ANTIC just to name a few.

World Wide Web actors and stakeholders leave the Infobahn governance forum, retaining that the Multi task development Superhighway tool must be appropriately distributed. These done, skilled web wizards will form a secretariat composed of the civil society, government and the private sector representatives to run online activities of the network under strict surveillance to avoid any form or active colour of frustration in the infrastructure.
