International Day of Non-Violence
2 October 2013

The International Day of Non-Violence is marked on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.

This day is an occasion to “disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness”. The resolution reaffirms “the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence” and the desire “to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence”.

International Day for Disaster Reduction
13 October 2013

The theme of the 2013 International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) is “The Ageing Population”.

On 21 December 2009, the General Assembly decided to designate 13 October as the date to commemorate IDDR and provide the Day with its official name. The objective of the observance is to raise awareness of how people are taking action to reduce their risk to disasters.

World Food Day

The official World Food Day theme, announced each spring by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), gives focus to World Food Day observances and raises awareness and understanding of approaches to ending hunger.

ISSME World Conference 2013
18-21 October 2013

The ISSME World Conference 2013 (IWC 2013), being organised in Gurgaon, Delhi NCR (India) from 18-21 October focuses on Best Practices in Promoting SMEs with a main theme of “Fostering International Linkages for SMEs Development”.

The conference will not only talk about the lessons learnt but also look into the opportunities and challenges related to international linkages between large and small & medium enterprises in the areas of manufacturing, trading and services.

World Development Information Day
24 October 2013

World Development Information Day is annually held on October 24 to draw attention of worldwide public opinion to development problems and the need to strengthen international cooperation to solve them.

Many events are organised to focus attention on the work that the UN does, particularly with regard to problems of trade and development. Many of these are aimed at journalists working for a range of media, including television, radio, newspapers, magazines and Internet sites.

United Nations Day
24 October 2013

On October 24, 1945, the United Nations (UN) came into force when the five permanent members of the security council ratified the charter that had been drawn up earlier that year. These members were: France, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Since 1948, the event’s anniversary has been known as United Nations Day. It is an occasion to highlight, celebrate and reflect on the work of the United Nations and its family of specialized agencies.

World Disarmament Week
24-30 October 2013

The annual observance of Disarmament Week was called for in the Final Document of the General Assembly 1978 special session on disarmament.

In 1995, the General Assembly invited governments and NGOs to continue taking an active part in Disarmament Week. It invited the Secretary-General to continue using United Nations information entities to promote a better understanding among the public of disarmament problems, and the aims of the Week.
